Business Law Resources For Indie Authors

Hey y'all. If you're like me, as soon as you start thinking about the business side of writing it makes you want to throw in the towel. There is an overwhelming amount of contradicting information when you take to Google and you don't know what to trust. But the truth is being an author means you are now CEO of your own business and wearing that hat. So I've been looking for resources to make this part of the job a lot less stressful.

I'm excited to finally share that I've found two books to recommend on the topic and I've really found them helpful. Yes, I'm still planning on hiring an accountant and even consulting a literary lawyer for some things as needed, but these books have brought clarity on a lot of the main business worries I have had.

I will link them below for you. I hope they help you on your author journey. Leave me a comment and let me know if you've read these, or have other legal resources to recommend to me.

Self-Publisher's Legal Handbook, Second Edition: Updated Guide to Protecting Your Rights and Wallet by Helen Sedwick (Note this is the second edition of this book)

Literary Law Guide for Authors: Copyright, Trademark, and Contracts in Plain Language (Second Edition)

NOTE: You can hunt down an affordable used copy of this book. It's currently out of print. Or a cheap used copy of the 1st edition.

Bonus: I've had it recommended to me by reputable authors that it's worth it to pay to be a member of The Authors Guild. They do things like going to bat with Amazon for you if they take down your book.

Until next time,

xoxo

Where Have I Been? A Journal Entry on The Last Few Years

Introduction: Hey everyone! Happy New Year! I'm back! I know I haven't posted in over a year and I am here to tell you all about why and what's been going on. I hope your holidays went well, your writing and reading has been joyful, and that you are smashing your goals for the month already. I hope you are doing things you love that bring you happiness and may this year be the best for you! Things Didn't Go As I Planned... Here I am in 2026, not published, not a lot of my goals met that I have set year after year. Some new and some old. Putting out all my words of wisdom, writer advice, and failing at it myself. Story of my life. Lol  I know the secrets, but doing them for myself is a whole different ball game. I've been on a journey these last 5 years since I started writing and I've learned a lot, experienced a lot, and grown up a lot all on the road to success. It will happen for me. Just a few years later than I planned, and that is okay. My writing journey ...

Writing What You "should be" writing vs. Writing What you Love

As this year comes to a close, I wanted to share about the battle of writing what you think you should be writing vs. what you love. When I first started writing, I thought I should write a YA fantasy very much along the lines of Twilight. Now, I still love Twilight to this day as much as my 13 year old heart did, and I will forever be in the fandom and my heart in Forks, WA, but as I was writing my Twilight-esque book, I noticed it got harder and harder as I went on. I wasn't loving the book anymore. It's because I was reading and loving all of these steamy contemporary billionaire romance novels and that is where my heart was, and what I was supposed to be writing. Not forcing out a book that teenage me would like. Or I found "more respectable or credible" somehow. But the truth was I wasn’t reading YA anymore and  I shouldn’t have been writing in a genre I wasn’t passionate about anymore.   So, I quickly wrapped up that book to give myself some closure and then s...

About Me & This Blog

Who Am I?  Hi! Welcome to my blog. I’m R L Tynes. I'm a romance reader, writer, coffee lover, cat mom, fangirl, and knowledge seeker trying her best at slow living by prioritizing peace and joy. I'm always searching for my next hobby, and when I'm not doing that, I'm probably sleeping way to much. Lol  Why did I choose to start a blog in 2023? I kept thinking about how I wanted a meaningful, safe, and cozy space to have an online presence in that was 100% positive, uplifting, and in my control.  A place that didn't leave my mind spinning and fill me with negative feelings like social media sometimes can. A place to share longform content, document my own writing and publishing journey, and share more information for writers.  I also thought I would love to blog, and I still read blogs to this day, finding helpful information through them. I want to be apart of and contribute to the author/blogger community. So here we are like it's 2007, and I can live out my ch...
