Using The Day Job For The Dream Job

I work Monday thru Wednesday part time at my day job every single week. It's a good job that works well with my schedule, and allows me to work on my dream job with more than enough time. But of course, the day job is not the dream job.

The dream job is to be an author full time. To be the CEO of my writing business. What artistic professional doesn't want to get paid for their art and do it full time? None that I know of.

Having to work the day job is necessary, but don't let it take away your gratitude, and don't let it kill your dreams.

Here are two thoughts I try and always think about when I go into my day job that keeps me in line with my goals.

I am using my day job for my dream job.

Remember, that day job is temporary. You will get to a point where you make enough money with your writing to leave that job. Saying these words to yourself also gives you gratitude for where you are in the journey, and that's one of the best things you can have for that day job.  It's paying for your editing services and Facebook ads for your new book release. Use the day job FOR the dream job, and eventually you'll just be at your dream job.

The second thought:

If you don't work to make your dreams come true, you will always be working to make someone else's dreams come true.

(I'm pretty sure this phrase came out of some self help book, but I can't remember which one. So I'm saying right now, those are not my words, and I'm not stealing them.😂)

I find this one very powerful because my day job is one at a small business. I am seeing my boss, the business creator, live her dreams out, reach her goals, and I'm helping her do it while I'm there. I don't want to make someone else's dreams come true. I want to fulfill my own. There's nothing that is more motivating to me than being able to walk out of that day job one day because I can tell them that my dreams are out earning this job, and I'm going to work on them full time. This thought also keeps me on "the edge." It helps me not to get too comfortable at my day job, remember that it is a stepping stone, and not to let the day job kill my dream job.

If you're having to work a day job right now, especially if you don't like that job, try and remember these two thoughts everyday and it will help you get through this temporary job on the way to your dreams coming true.

The best books on writing craft that have changed my life are also under my recommended reads tab for you.  Enjoy! Why did I choose to start a blog in 2023? I kept thinking about how I wanted a safe and cozy space to have an online presence in that was 100% positive and in my control.  A place that didn't leave my mind spinning and have me feeling bad like when I get on social media. A place to share longform content, and more information for writers. Social medi...

My Top 3 Writing Craft Books Of 2024

Hey writers! Today I'm sharing the books that I've found most helpful to me this year on my writing journey. Before I read these books and actually learned some real writing rules, tips, and how to construct a fictional story, my drafts were all over the place.  They were very disconnected and had no point to them. I didn't even know the basics like character goals, motivation, and conflict. And I learned that all fiction IS conflict.  So here are the top 3 books I've found that made a difference in my writing this year. They now sit permanently on my desk. These books taught me the very basics and gave me a road map to craft a story that finally had a purpose, cohesion, and most of all, conflict.  I have these linked in my Recommended Reads Page at the top of the blog. I hope these help you on your journey as much as they have me!   1 .) Passionate Ink by Angela Knight - The new edition is now available, but if you can get your hands on the old edition, I recom...

What Sparks a Story Idea in Me

A common question writers get is "Where do you get all these ideas from?" The truth is, it's different for every writer. Everyone's brain is different, and the way we create is all different. Which is one of the reasons it makes this writing journey so magical and beautiful.  It's also a reason there is room at the table for every single writer. Because no one can write a book exactly like you can. They will all be unique. Even if 10 writers are given the same story to write and the same characters, plot points, etc. You will still have 10 different books because everyone's brain will take a different creative journey to connect those plot points and get to "the end."  Today I'm sharing a glimpse into my process. How I get story ideas. Other authors may get ideas these ways too and others won’t. There is no wrong process in the ideation stage. It's whatever works for you. On that note, I want to share a quotes from Meghan March's Creativ...
